Five Tips for Healthy, Beautiful Fingernails

Although I love my three boys more than anything, sometimes I do wish I had a girl whose fingernails I could paint. So since no one in my immediate family is going to be putting on nail polish anytime soon, I thought I'd share my favorite nail-care tips from our Who Knew? books with you!

    How ’Bout a Buff?
If your manicure usually ends up chipped, consider buffing your nails as an alternative. Buffers usually run around a dollar at beauty supply stores, and can bring your nails to a natural shine that is sure to get noticed. Just make sure to only buff your nails once a week. Over-buffing will weaken the nails by taking away their top layer and making them more porous.

    Moisturize Your Cuticles
Keeping your cuticles moisturized makes sure your nails stay healthy and grow long (not to mention, fewer pesky hangnails). Make your own cuticle cream by thoroughly mixing 2 tablespoons each of olive oil and petroleum jelly along with the zest of half an orange. Store in the refrigerator when you’re not using it, and apply at bedtime. Want an even easier way to moisturize your cuticles? Just submerge your nails in mayonnaise for 5 minutes several times a week.

A Fast Dry for Nail Polish
You have just enough time to touch-up your nails before you leave—but not enough time to dry them. Make your nail polish dry more quickly by spraying your final coat with cooking spray. The oil will help them dry faster, and moisturize your cuticles, too!

    How to Brighten Your Nails
If your fingernails have become stained by wearing dark nail polish, here’s a quick fix: Plop a denture-cleaning tablet into a glass of water and soak your nails for a couple of minutes. The stain will come right off.

    Get Rid of Fungus
If yellow fingernail or toenail fungus is your problem, here's an all-natural way to fight it from our friends at Balance Westside Wellness. Soak your fingers or toes in the darkest beer you can find. The yeast in the beer attracts the fungus out from underneath your nails. (Unfortunately, it’s important that you don’t drink any beer during this treatment! It will up the yeast content in your body, making the toenail fungus more likely to stick around.)

Do you have any homegrown manicure, pedicure, or nail tips of your own? What about some little girls who love nail polish? :)

    Hi Erika,
Who Knew? 3 is a completely different book from "Best of 1 & 2." All new tips! The only ones you may see that are the same are the few tips labeled "Classic Tips" that we have in Who Knew? 3. To snag "Best of" while it's still on sale for $19.95, here is the link!
